Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of 24 wonderful second-grade students in the heart of the Silicon Valley in San Jose. The majority of my students are learning English as a second language and qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch, but this does not hold them back in any way. Students come to school daily with a drive to learn more academically, and I strive to do my best to give that to them. They deserve nothing but the most solid educational experience possible! Everyone at the school including teachers, principal, support staff, parents, and students, helps to make our school a wonderful place to be and learn. Help us make our educational experiences even more memorable!
My Project
In our grade level, we use Scholastic News to enhance our English Language Development (ELD) curriculum. Each student has his/her own article and various concepts are learned, such as science, history, and content about holidays and/or current events. The articles are engaging because they are about topics that second grade students are interested in. They also give students an opportunity to practice nonfiction reading and learn new and challenging academic vocabulary. We like to use the online component that goes with it as well. Students are able to watch a short video clip related to the content, preview vocabulary with visuals and examples, and listen to the text for a great first cold read. There are free pro tables available that enhance comprehension as well as a learning game. Unfortunately, next school year we will be facing some budget cuts. With less funding, we are looking at cutting this wonderful resource from our school. Please help get these articles into our classroom for our next school year! Thank you so much for your interest in education.
