Building Language for English Language Learners

My students need language photo magnets to build their English vocabulary.

My Students

Imagine entering the classroom of a foreign country. Could you tell the teacher the name of the thing you are sitting on or what you are holding? The teacher smiles and kindly tells you in their native language to hang up your backpack, sit down at a desk, pick-up your pencil, write your name?

My students are awesome, beautiful, caring, determined, eager, fantastic, great, helpful, intelligent, joyous, kind, loving, marvelous, nice, outstanding, polite, qualified, remarkable, super, terrific, unique, valuable, wonderful, eXcited, youthful, and zealous!

My students are also challenged because of their limited English vocabulary. Our school is located in rural Georgia. My students have very limited experiences and, therefore, their schema is narrowed. My students deserve and I intend to supply them with an abundance of learning opportunities to build their vocabulary, experiences, and "background knowledge."

My Project

I have requested magnetic vocabulary photo cards that focus on a variety of interest. The students that I serve are expected to listen, speak, read, and write about their experiences. Earlier this year, I was reading a book to my first graders. One of my students politely raised his hand and asked me, "What is a plum?" I wanted to stop what I was doing and go to the grocery store to buy the young man a plum. How do you explain, "What is a plum?" By having a picture of the fruit, I could have provided the student with a clearer explanation. On another occasion, a student asked, "What is an umbrella?" One day I was asked, "What is thunder?" As a teacher with a diverse background - one who has tasted a plum, held an umbrella, rode in a hot air balloon, experienced a professional baseball game – I want to share these things with my students. I realize that we can’t trot all over the state to build experiences, but I CAN provide them with a foundation from which they can build.

I never truly understood the experience of walking into a room filled with people speaking a different language until I was required to attend a Hispanic church service as part of a field experience when working on my degree.

When everyone in the sanctuary stood up, I stood up; when everyone sat down, I sat down; when everyone opened their Bible; I opened mine. All the while I had no idea what was being said. Vocabulary is essential to understanding and understanding to learning!
