Building Language and Literacy for Multilingual Learners

Help me give my students engaging, language-rich books that build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and develop confidence in speaking and understanding English.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As an EML teacher, I have the privilege of watching my multilingual learners find their voices in a new language. My students come to me with a wide range of English language abilities. Some are beginning to understand their first words and phrases, while others are learning to express increasingly complex ideas. I love watching a student make a connection between a picture and a new word, take a chance using an unfamiliar phrase, or light up when they realize they understood a story in English. Every new word gives them another way to understand, participate, and share what they know.

I want my students to discover that books can be a place where new words make sense, conversations begin, and their own voices grow stronger and these books will help me create engaging read-aloud experiences where students can learn new vocabulary naturally through stories, illustrations, conversation, and repeated exposure.

As we read together, my students will have opportunities to predict, retell, ask questions, make connections, discuss characters, and practice using new language with their classmates.

Because my students range from kindergarten through fifth grade, they need books that welcome them into learning at many different levels. A thoughtfully selected collection of picture books, wordless books, and language-rich stories will allow me to meet students where they are while continually helping them grow.

My goal is to build more than a collection of books. I want to create a space filled with language, conversation, curiosity, and the joy of reading together. Most of all, I want my multilingual learners to know their ideas are worth sharing and to develop the language and confidence to share them.
