Building Knowledge With Coins and Shapes

My students need plastic coins and three-dimensional shapes to access our math lessons!

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students are active and hands-on learners. Math is one of their favorite subjects! One of the most popular units of study features three-dimensional shapes and coin recognition. At other times of the year, my students have manipulatives that they use to help them access the content in a visual, tactile way. However, we do not have any manipulatives to support our favorite unit.

I am requesting three-dimensional shapes that students will use to compose their structures.

These manipulatives will also give students the opportunity to have their own set of materials to study and examine the properties of each form. I am also requesting plastic coins that we will use to learn about addition and subtraction. Students use coins to understand their values, as well as to use them as symbols when solving algebraic algorithms.
