Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Any teacher working with very young English Language Learners knows the difficulty in building their vocabulary. While some students absorb new words like sponges, for some it can take quite some time. Using posters with pictures is a start, but nothing beats having the actual object to use as an example. Students find this engaging since they get to touch and manipulate the object. By associating objects with a particular letter sound, students associate words with objects in addition to recognizing and name letters. Unfortunately, some of our incoming Kindergartners have not refined their fine motor skills. They tend to not know how to tie their shoes, don't know their left from their right, and cannot grasp a pencil or hold scissors correctly. This poses a great problem when working with our state mandated scripted phonics workbooks. I propose using soft velour see-through bags that let kids peek inside to search for objects that start with that particular letter. By using these see through alphabet bags, students will expand their vocabulary and focus on learning rather than worry if they are going to lose a manipulative. In addition, this product will build self -esteem in our students who are learning English, students who need more time to remember, and provide an unforgettable way to learn their letters and sounds.
