I work with amazing children who have very limited life experiences. From a reading teacher's perspective, this makes understanding texts, connecting with stories and ideas, and making inferences difficult. I want to bring the world to my students.
My students love learning in new ways.
They thrive with hands-on, meaningful projects. Working together with a real purpose is the best way to reach them. Many of my students have never been too far outside of the city we live in. Others travel with their families and have stories to share. We are always looking for a new way to teach and learn and technology helps! Our school is a Title I School. So much of our student population is lacking in educational technology. Our school currently has a computer lab and each classroom has 3-5 ipads. We received the Apple ConnectEd Grant, so next year, every student will have an ipad. I've been looking into ways to capitalize on that for my students' growth and creativity. My kiddos seem to really come to life when we incorporate technology. Most recently, we created news broadcasts using iMovie about the novel we completed. They loved it much more than writing a report.
A GoPro Hero will be used in many ways for my classroom. I've noticed that they really become engaged when I share photos of vacations or my children doing crazy things. This would be, not only a way for me to bring my experiences to them, but for the class to share their life with each other. I plan on traveling this summer to the Galapagos, Peru, and Jamaica. I want to document my travels and share it with my students through a blog. Then, use this as a model to create a class blog where students then do the same with the Gopro. I envision each student being held responsible to photograph an adventure--whether it be a family vacation, a school field trip, or a bike ride around the block, document, publish, and share using the GoPro App. Other students will be able to comment, ask questions, and make connections. This will create a sense of community in the classroom, but will also awaken a curiosity for exploring the world. The possibilities for the GoPro are endless!
This project will help bring learning alive.
My students will be able to visibly share all of the amazing things they do in and out of school. Through our blog, we will be able to share our lives and learning with others. This will open the door for reflecting on our experiences, making connections with what we are learning, and see their value in the classroom and community. This new technology will add a level of excitement to our lives and give my students a sense of ownership.
