Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are off to a great start, with our team competition in our engineering events, but we need a little help. As teachers we try to encourage students to take part of in our engineering initiatives. Engineering challenges encourages students to trust their problem-solving abilities, experiment, and see failures as part of the learning process. This builds resilience and self-assurance and help develop analytical skills in various topics that include optics, physics and mechanical energy.

Some of the items that we are requesting are optic kits, balsa wood, ping pong balls, wind power, earphones and levers.

The balsa wood would help the students build towers and a helicopter in the events that they will compete in. Students need to build a 50 cm tower with the designated base that will hold 15 kg of sand. Helicopter must be light enough to lift the apparatus for a designated time. Student will need to design and test in order to determine the best design. Optics kit and mirrors help student navigate angles to a laser beam target. Students competition entails that position mirrors around barriers toward the designated target point. Wind power kit will help us design a wind turbine to capture the greatest wind power. Additional supplies of levers and gears will help to create a Rube Goldberg machine that will require various task with dominoes, marbles and ping pongs. Earphones are being requested as students research and watch videos , each of them can listen to themselves.

As a high socially economically disadvantage school where funds are limited.

We love watching our students are they unlock new skills and knowledge is incredibly rewarding. As they grow in their events they have this "can do" attitude as they learn through their mistakes and their ability to adapt and persevere is impressive.
