Building Friendships Through Literature and Morning Meetings
My students need books that fosters kindness, acceptance, and respect while building a positive classroom community that enhances literacy skills during morning meetings.
My students live in a rapidly changing coastal community with a high population of military families. Our student enrollment is consistently increasing throughout the school year so much so my district is opening a new elementary school which means students will be moving schools. This will create many challenges as we adjust to changes and build new relationships. We use a multiple tier system of supports to collaborate in order to reach all students and their diverse learning needs.
My second grade students are inquisitive and are most excited to learn when investigating how things work or finding answers to their questions through reading engaging texts.
My Project
Through the use of morning meetings I will be able to provide a time that focuses on building social and academic skills. The Morning Meeting Book and the Doing Language Arts in Morning Meeting book will help me effectively structure and plan our greeting time while incorporating reading and writing skills. Therefore, not losing valuable academic time, but using an approach that meets the needs of the whole child. Story elements such as characters, problem/solution and main idea can be taught using the picture books, and writing skills and grammar can be addressed during the morning message used to greet students.
"In a world where you can be anything, be kind" is our class motto!
These picture books will be used to teach character traits of respectfulness, self-control, acceptance, responsibility and model how to be a good, caring friend. When students build a good relationship with their teacher and classmates, they are more confident and willing to take risks to learn new things. I want to build a classroom community that not only loves learning, but supports and encourages each other to grow and do their best.
These books and teacher guides for morning meetings will change the morale of my classroom and foster development of citizenship skills needed in this generation.
