In the past I have observed my students become excited about their learning when working collaboratively with peers on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects. They build upon their prior knowledge to design plans for solving a problem or making their own creation. These projects have lacked a literacy connection. In my classroom I want to bridge the gap between reading, thinking and creating. By having students first read a high interest picture book I would be fostering a love for reading and creating life-long readers. We would also develop comprehension skills that are vital to literacy development like character analysis, story elements, and inferencing. Students would then be able to make connections from the text like how the main character responded to a situation and apply that understanding to create their own solution to a similar situation or devise a related project inspired by the text or their own imagination.
