Everyone likes to hear a good story! My students are no different. My students need reading resources to help them become better readers. Due to budget cuts, they are losing resources each year and do not receive the opportunities that wealthy districts do.
My students are third grade students at a public school in southeastern Ohio.
We currently have around 720 students in our school with around 40% qualifying for free and reduced price lunches. My students' reading levels range from Kindergarten to sixth grade. I also have several special education and special needs students in my classroom as well. Many of my students struggle with reading and 30% of them receive intensive reading intervention. This year I will have a self-contained classroom of around 25 students.
My Project
My students need a wireless headphones set with extra headphones for a listening center to help them become better readers. Having a listening center in my room will allow my students the opportunity to listen to fluent reading and improve their reading ability as well.
I currently implement the Reading Workshop approach to teaching reading. This allows me to conference with each student individually and work with small groups of students to provide the intervention they need. Having a listening center created with the headphones I am requesting would allow my students to be engaged in listening to reading while allowing me to work with other students.
This center would also allow me to differentiate my instruction by rotating students through the center and having students listen to reading at their instructional level. Listening to reading is a research based teaching strategy that my students could partake in on a daily basis with a listening center.
My students deserve to have resources that are available to students in wealthier districts.
I owe it to my students to provide them with as much education as I can, and I need these headphones to help them achieve their goals and become proficient readers!
