My school is incredibly diverse and is currently bursting at the seams. It has the highest enrollment of any middle school in the Humble area, making it hard to keep enough resources on hand for all of them. Every year, the number of English language learners I have in class increases, and I have to find more and more ways to build their fluency and reading skills.
Despite any cultural, economic, or linguistic differences, my 6th graders all have one thing in common - they love reading!
I'm hoping this set of audio books will keep that momentum going and going!
My Project
Who doesn't love a good story? These audio books and portable CD players will allow students to listen to fluent reading for a sustained period of time. As they listen and follow along with the text, students will have the chance to build their comprehension, word recognition, and develop their own oral language skills.
Furthermore, the portable CD players will allow the students to be able to find a comfortable place to sit and read, instead of being tied to a computer.
When students have some freedom to move around and get comfortable, they are much more willing to devote time to reading for longer periods of time.
