Building Financial Literacy Through a Classroom Economy

Help me give my students cleaning supplies, classroom tools, and snacks to support our classroom economy, where they earn and spend money while learning financial literacy, responsibility, and real-world math skills.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Sixth-grade math and seventh-grade Algebra 1 students are learning financial literacy through a hands-on classroom economy that connects math to real life. Using ClassBank, students hold jobs such as teacher assistants, classroom cleaners, tutors, and celebrators. Each role teaches responsibility, teamwork, and leadership while helping the classroom run smoothly. Students earn classroom money for completing their jobs and use their earnings to purchase snacks and rewards from the classroom store. This system allows them to practice budgeting, saving, and spending while applying math concepts like decimals, percentages, and algebraic reasoning.

The requested items will make a meaningful difference in student learning.

Clorox wipes, Lysol spray, microfiber cleaning cloths, and dry erase markers will help maintain a clean, organized, and interactive learning space where students can focus and feel comfortable. A mobile whiteboard will support flexible instruction and group collaboration. Snacks such as Goldfish crackers, cookies, Skinny Pop popcorn, Pringles, Kit Kats, Pop-Tarts, and fruit snacks will stock the classroom store, giving students tangible rewards for their hard work and financial decision-making. These items transform abstract financial concepts into real experiences that motivate students to take ownership of their learning.

The goal of this project is to help students build lifelong financial literacy skills while strengthening their understanding of math. By managing classroom money, they learn the value of earning, saving, and spending wisely. What makes these students special is their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to learn through hands-on experiences. Many are exploring financial literacy for the first time, and their excitement to participate in this classroom economy shows their desire to connect learning to real life. With this project, they will gain confidence, responsibility, and the skills needed to make smart financial choices in the future.
