Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English Language Acquisition at a Title I elementary school in Maryland where the population of students is about 75% English learners. My roster consists of 43 first grade English learners, several who are new to the country. As the ESOL teacher, I co-teach with classroom teachers to provide meaningful instruction for our students by meeting the language demands of the content areas.
My students are curious, creative, and eager to learn a new language.
I hope to provide them with engaging activities that will build their oral language skills and set a foundation for reading and writing success.
My Project
Research shows that strong oral language skills is the foundation for learning to read and write. My first grade students are learning to read and write while also learning a new language, which can be quite challenging. I want to give my students as many opportunities as I can to produce language in meaningful ways.
With this project, I hope to build their oral language skills through fun and engaging digital activities.
The headsets will allow students to practice speaking and listening while interacting with digital programs such as Wixie or Smart Learning Suite. This practice will also support their success on the annual WIDA Access test!
