Building Empathy One Character at a Time

My Students

I am privileged to teach and to learn from 60 seventh graders each day. We are part of a Title I school in a rural school district. While my students are with me, I hope to build relationships through a love of reading, and in turn, expose them to a world outside of their own environments.

My Project

Like so many other students across the country, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my 7th graders have not had a “normal” school year since they were in 4th grade. Because of this, I have noticed that their social-emotional maturity has also been delayed. In hopes of recovering this loss, I want my students to be exposed to and ultimately develop empathy for all kinds of people and characters that may be different from them. I want to instill in my students that different does not mean less than. I hope to do this through exposing them to diverse characters in literature such as Freak the Mighty that introduce my students to characters with appear "different" on the surface, but are actually their own type of heroes.
