Building Empathy and a Love of Reading with Wonder

Help me give my students the ability to read the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. This will teach them empathy for others that are not like them.

My Project

My third-grade students are at a critical point in their reading journey—this is where we move from learning to read to truly loving reading. I want to provide them with meaningful, engaging stories that not only capture their interest but also help shape who they are as people. That’s why I am so excited to bring the novel Wonder into our classroom.

Wonder is a powerful and engaging story that immediately draws students in.

It follows Auggie, a young boy with a facial difference, as he navigates attending public school for the first time. Through his experiences, students see firsthand the challenges of fitting in, making friends, and being accepted.

This novel does more than entertain—it teaches empathy, kindness, and acceptance. My students will explore important themes such as kindness over judgment and understanding differences. They will learn that while people may look different on the outside, we all share the same feelings, hopes, and need for belonging.

By providing each student with access to this novel, I can create shared reading experiences that spark thoughtful discussions, build vocabulary, and strengthen comprehension skills. Most importantly, it will help foster a classroom culture where students celebrate differences and support one another.

With your support, my students will not only grow as readers but also as compassionate individuals who understand the importance of kindness and inclusion.
