My students are 21st century learners who thrive on immediacy, actively seek choice and challenges in their paths to knowledge, and are consistently encouraged to build meaning in ways that create relevance and ownership of learning. Imagine what a Lego makerspace would bring to our classroom!
My 5th graders are knowledge seekers.
They are collaborative masters. These students set goals, and, despite setbacks, their confidence and willingness to ask questions blows me away every day. While lessons are tailored to meet the individual needs to the twenty students within my classroom walls, our personalized and connected learning experiences spread our mission globally promoting collaboration beyond school walls and showing students that learning does not end with the concrete walls of our classroom.
Our school is a Title I building with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and economic situations. Students are given opportunities in our school to explore avenues of learning that are not typically available to them outside of the school day. I want to ensure that I am giving them every possible opportunity to reach their highest potentials! Our school community supports students as they take academic risks, accepting challenges and encouraging students to succeed!
My Project
Transport yourself back to 5th grade. How many choices did you have in how you met the learning goals your teacher set? In our classroom, students are consistently given choice in time, path, pace, and place in which their learning occurs.
In an effort to provide more daily STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) opportunities, students will be provided with a wider variety of choices for how they will spend their intervention time next year, allowing them tap into topics and skill sets meet their interests and tap into personal learning preferences.
Our Lego Makerspace will be available for students to design and create structures or vehicles, solve design challenges, and work in teams to explore how their work can positively influence others. The variety of pieces will allow students to choose the direction their work takes without major limitations. We will continually share our outcomes digitally to show others our accomplishments and reflect on our learning!
By aiding our classroom in achieving this goal, you will be helping students reach learning goals on a much deeper level.
A Lego makerspace is more that merely building. Students will be able to invent and test their ideas. This space will encourage a growth mindset, pushing students to set goals, reflect on failures as first attempts at something much greater, and push them to make choices in how they can most effectively problem solve. Most importantly, they will be having fun!
