Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students desire to learn beyond the four walls that my classroom provides. They need access to technology, specifically computers, so that they can join this generation's focus of being technological learners. Computers would provide them access to tools that I, as one person, can't provide.
My students live in a very urban area of Los Angeles, where 34% are living in poverty.
Many of my students come from single family homes or live with extended family who are working two jobs to make ends meet. As my students' families live with these challenges it means that not all of my students have computers, or access to the Internet, at home. My room is open before school, at nutrition, and during lunch. The students know my room is a safe space for them to create, research, and learn. To some, my classroom is a second home and having computers for them to count on would change all of our worlds. My students want to be successful, but not having access to technology means that they are already behind. I am not willing to settle with our budget restraints, and know that having computers will help me teach my students tools that they will use for the rest of their lives.
My Project
I created a website for my students to be able to access online assignments, protected choreography videos, and links to useful information, such as careers in the arts, and inspiring videos. Having computers means I can really start to utilize this website and help my students have a voice in online forum discussions. I was using a very old laptop in the room and it was being used in every period, on everyday, until it stopped working. The students desire to have access to a world outside their everyday lives. Computers would allow them to research, discover dance all around the world, and provide a cultural experience which is currently lacking. They could learn how to edit music or film from shows and become independent in these areas. These are tools that they will use far beyond this one school year, but I can't give my students these tools without access to computers and the Internet.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom because it will allow me to give students access to information beyond my four walls.
My students' lives would be changed by this addition to my room as technology is the driving force behind many college classes or current careers. The lack of technology access, urban difficulties, and poverty, already means that my students are behind, but with your help and two new computers I can start to teach these tools one day at time.
