Building, Creating, and Learning: STEM Tools Needed! (Title 1)

Help me give my students STEM materials that will provide my first graders with opportunities to strengthen their math skills while developing creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through engaging, purposeful play.

My Project

I teach first grade at a Title I school in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where our diverse students include many children from active-duty and retired military families due to our proximity to Fort Bragg. I want to provide my students with hands-on opportunities to learn, create, collaborate, and build confidence as they explore STEM concepts.

This project will provide LEGO building materials, magnetic tiles, reusable LCD writing tablets, and other STEM resources.

These materials will be used during small-group instruction, whole-group lessons, morning bins, and indoor recess to support both academic learning and important social-emotional skills.

Students will use these hands-on materials to reinforce first-grade math standards by exploring shapes, patterns, counting, measurement, addition, and problem-solving. They will also use the LCD writing tablets to draw models, practice numbers and equations, and communicate their mathematical thinking.

Beyond academics, these materials will encourage creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and teamwork. Students will work together to design and build structures, share ideas, listen to classmates, solve problems, and learn from mistakes. When a structure does not work as planned, students will have opportunities to rethink, revise, and try again—building perseverance and problem-solving skills along the way.

Morning bins will provide purposeful opportunities for students to explore and create as they begin their day, while indoor recess will offer engaging, screen-free activities that promote positive social interaction.

With these resources, my students will not simply learn about STEM—they will experience it. They will have opportunities to build, create, test, communicate, and discover, helping them become confident mathematicians, creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and collaborative learners.
