My school's main focus this year is establishing connections. Our staff and students are tasked with finding academic, cultural, and social connections to help us become bright, well-rounded individuals who can positively contribute to our society. Our students participate in an exceptional PBIS program which aims to recognize and promote positive behaviors. Each day, week, and month we are fortunate to be around students who care for, and respect one another despite their differences.
One of the most rewarding times for me at our school, is Black History Month.
Every single year, without fail, I notice students of various races holding hands and embracing each other during Dr. Martin Luther King's, I Have a Dream speech. Students as young as 6 and 7 years old recognize the importance of celebrating all people, and treating them equally. I wish to strengthen students' awareness of their individual culture and their roots, and subsequently create an atmosphere where all students can celebrate each others' differences and build connections!
My Project
Our students have the opportunity to learn more about the African Culture this coming February. Through theatre and music, a company named Bright Star Children's Theatre, will present a program rich in African Folktales. Bright Star Children's Theatre will present this curriculum-integrated performance to our entire student body. Students will be told folktales from Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa! They will learn how African folktales sometimes use animals to act as humans, so that a lesson can be told. In the midst of this story telling, the actors will use voices, movement and drums to create musical interest.
This program connects to each grade level's curriculum in reading, writing and social studies.
Our school has raised almost 50% of the funds needed to bring this spectacular performance to our students. Can you please help us fund this? Thank you for your time and consideration!
