Building Comprehension Through STEM and Picture Books!

My Students

My school is unique because we have a specific focus on STEM curriculum and are considered a school of choice. This means that we don't have specific boundary lines for attendance, but that anyone from surrounding areas is able to attend through a lottery system.

We attract students from diverse populations, who are interested in the sciences; as such, we try to provide unique opportunities for students to pursue and enrich learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

My Project

Everyone loves a good story, right? My students are no exception! The "Picture Perfect STEM Lessons Kit" will provide me with a teacher's guide, as well as the trade books needed for introducing individual STEM lessons. The picture books will also help students build background knowledge which will help make learning more authentic.

By bringing engaging literature into the classroom, I will be able to give my students the opportunity to make connections through reciprocal teaching strategies and hands on STEM activities.

Students will strengthen language skills by learning to predict, question, clarify and summarize in order to build comprehension skills. They will also be given opportunities to apply these skills in the subject areas associated with STEM education.
