My Project

Imagine a school where every story not only strengthens reading skills but also teaches children to see the world through another’s eyes and take action to help others. That’s what this project will bring to life.

My students love stories, and stories are one of the best ways to teach compassion.

When children read about characters who face challenges, make mistakes, or show kindness, they begin to understand perspectives beyond their own. With your help, I can fill our shelves with SEL books from Character Strong’s PurposeFull People collection—stories that bring empathy, respect, and responsibility to life for every grade level.

Each month, every teacher leads a Character Strong lesson focusing on a trait such as kindness, responsibility, or compassion. To extend that learning, a parent volunteer will visit classrooms to read a book connected to the monthly theme. These read-alouds give students a chance to pause, reflect, and talk about what compassion looks like in everyday life.

Students will learn both components of compassion: first, to understand others by seeing the world through their eyes; and second, to act to alleviate suffering by supporting those in need. They will practice this through small but powerful actions—helping a struggling classmate, including someone who feels left out, offering kind words, or creating crafts such as cards, artwork, or friendship bracelets to brighten someone’s day.

I will measure growth not through tests, but through daily actions and positive peer interactions in classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds.
