Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a middle school vocal music teacher in an ethnically diverse, financially unstable urban community.

My students love music, but they have trouble relating to Bach, Handel, and the composers we consider "classical." My students relate more to Chris Brown, Beyonce, and T.I. They see these musicians constantly creating music, and they need to understand that they can create music as well. The most efficient and simplistic way for me to facilitate this is to provide drums for the students to work with. But the funds for these drums are not available, due to the economy and the tight constraints on educational budgets.

I am asking for two tubanos. This will assist in guiding my students to understanding how collaboration and teamwork create unique and beautiful sounds. We will be using Jim Solomon's D.R.U.M. curriculum, which emphasizes language development and rhythm to create patterns. This use of patterns to create music builds upon mathematical concepts. The discussion of sound and differences in timbre tie in with their studies of sound waves in physical science. The use of drums in the music classroom will supplement the core curriculum, helping students achieve national and state standards, as identified by No Child Left Behind.

My students will experience music with your donation. The motto of my classroom is: "We aren't just singers. We're music makers." Your donation will allow my students to live this philosophy.
