Building Character Through Drumming

My students need a class set of drums to learn character education skills such as integrity, perseverance, sharing, and courage.

My Students

If you are having a rough day and your favorite song comes on the radio, can it turn your day around? My students face many personal daily challenges and instilling character education traits is so important to their future. What better way to reach every student than through the power of music?

We are a Title 1 school in NC with about 70% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

The student population represents over 30 different countries of origin and we also feature a dual immersion language program in Spanish. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home. Many of my students come from single-parent households or live with someone other than their parents. I also teach several students who are essentially considered homeless. The students enjoy the school environment because for many it provides stability lacking in other areas of their lives.

My Project

My students will learn to express themselves through music using the classroom drums. The drums will allow us to explore courage, integrity, perseverance, sharing, and many other character traits. The instruments will also provide a common language that my students can use to communicate with one another. Many of my students speak a language other than English at home so communication can often be an issue. What better way to speak than through the language of music? I would like to provide performance opportunities for my students and share our experiences with the community. The drums will be exciting for all my students as we study the importance of drums in all world cultures.

Funds are severely limited in my school and are mostly used to provide materials for regular education classroom materials.

Music has made such an impact on my life and I want to instill that same love of music in my students. I want to motivate and encourage my students to believe in themselves and to consider themselves part of something larger as we work together as a team toward a common goal. These drums will provide much needed self-confidence to students who deal with life struggles daily.
