Building Bridges: Creating an Inclusive Autism Classroom for Severe Disabilities

My Project

Impact on Students:

Our students with severe disabilities require a specialized learning environment to thrive.

This project aims to establish an inclusive autism classroom that fosters student learning and promotes a sense of belonging.

Connection to Instructional Practices:

The proposed resources align with evidence-based instructional practices for autism education, ensuring a tailored and effective learning environment. This includes sensory integration techniques and personalized instructional materials.

Support for Teachers:

Teachers will benefit from this project through access to specialized tools and resources, aiding them in implementing effective strategies and accommodations. The goal is to empower educators to provide the best possible support to students with severe disabilities.

Support for Student:

The TV will be utilized to support students for whole group instruction using our new curriculum TeachTown. It will also be used for other whole group instruction for circle time to teach how to participate as well as social skills.

The students in the classroom are severely disabled and some are not yet potty trained. The classroom is equiped with a washer and dryer, but laundry soap is needed to wash soiled clothing as well as ziplock bags and other supplies to help with toiletry needs.

Other sensory toys such as the bubbles, the ball catch, and the hot potato will be used to teach social skills as well as how to attend to social activities.

The pens, envelopes, and other office supplies will give the teacher support to write IEPs as well as general classroom needs.

The microwave will be utilized to warm the student's food as there are some students who eat
