Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project begins in the library, and within a few weeks, the original mentors will spread out to teach the program throughout the school. The entire school will become the community. Students will be mentoring peers and creating connections that ripple outward. Through this initiative, students will learn the value of community service and understand that building a sense of belonging starts with small, intentional actions.

Collaborating on these puzzles requires students to listen, share ideas, and approach problem-solving from multiple perspectives.

By working side-by-side, they’ll naturally begin to understand their peers’ viewpoints and appreciate the unique ways others think. This shared experience of completing a puzzle piece by piece will foster empathy and a deeper understanding of those around them. Students will be paired with peers who could benefit from extra companionship—whether they are new students, those who feel isolated, or students with special needs.

All of my students are special because they bring unique abilities and perspectives. They will learn that inviting someone to participate in a simple activity like completing a puzzle can help alleviate feelings of loneliness or exclusion. As they mentor and befriend one another, they will create a sense of belonging and support for their peers, proving that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Success will be measured both through observation and student reflection. We will track participation and notice how often students engage with peers outside of their usual social circles. Feedback from students and mentors will also help gauge how well they’ve internalized these values of compassion and collaboration.

Once a puzzle is completed, students will glue it onto a backing and proudly display it around the school. These puzzle displays will symbolize shared accomplishments and serve as visual reminders of the connections they’ve built through collaboration and kindness.
