My Students

My students are very energetic first and second graders. The students come from low income backgrounds, and some of them have severe behavior, learning and emotional problems.

The makeup of my class is mostly African American and Arabic students, with some being classified as English Language Learners.

Many of the students are working below grade level for various reasons. Despite these issues, I want my students to know that they can achieve anything they set their mind to, and become productive citizens in their community.

My Project

The Lego Building blocks will foster creativity in the classroom. These Legos will give the students an opportunity to imagine themselves as engineers, architects and master builders.

It is very important for my students to see themselves outside of their environment.

The students like to use the unifix cubes that we are currently using, and they build various items. There are severe limitations to these cubes, so Legos will fulfil this need. Low Income students will be able to experience creative play and use the Legos as a resource in Math. Having these Legos in the classroom will enhance students' creative thinking, and give them an opportunity to present new ideas to their classmates, and to the teacher.
