Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need books in Spanish to connect them to the language in rich and meaningful ways.
"Quiero leer!" Are the words my bilingual students repeat to each other every day in our dual immersion classroom. It means, "I want to read!" and they read every single day. Many students in my classroom have experienced difficult life situations, different from anything you or I may have faced in our lives. Nonetheless, every student comes to school excited about speaking and learning two languages.
I work at a large Title 1 school that represents a variety of ethnically diverse families, many of whom are primarily Spanish speaking.
Building biliteracy in students is a high priority in our dual immersion program. Therefore, reading plays a major part in our daily learning. Although many of my students may already have a background in the Spanish language, it may not have been taught to them the same way it is taught in an academic setting. My goal is to not only develop bilingualism in my students but to provide them with the necessary tools to be productive members of our community.
My Project
Working at a Title 1 school has its challenges, providing students with rich and meaningful literature is one that I have found to be the most difficult in my classroom. Our dual immersion program is still pretty new, and we are slowly, still gathering all the necessary materials and resources to make it an effective program for our children.
I am requesting Spanish books for my classroom to provide all of my students with the opportunity to engage meaningfully in the language and to delve deeper into the world of reading.
The addition of more books in my classroom will give my students an excitement and motivation to get reading.
