I teach English Language Arts at the high school level. I love that my students love learning. They won't always willingly admit that, but they do. They are kind, compassionate, and funny; every day I learn something new from them. This school year I am teaching a new course that focuses on helping students grow as readers. Even in high school, students need support to increase their reading abilities and to help them find texts that will keep them engaged.
I believe that students should be inspired by what they read; not bored, confused, or unengaged because the text is not suited to their strengths or interests.
The most beautiful moments in the classroom are when students realize that reading can, in fact, be fun and exciting. I am excited about the upcoming school year to meet my new students and to see what great things they will achieve.
My Project
This book, The House of the Scorpion, is one that I have personally read and enjoyed very much; however, our school does not currently have a class set of the text. This text is one that has something for every reader. It is engaging and, at some points, impossible to put down. I know that my students would enjoy this novel because it is well written, engaging, and will bring out some great discussion topics. There is a high level of interest with this text because it is a dystopian novel, which is incredibly popular in today's world.
This text will be perfect for the new class I am teaching this year that is designed specifically to help those who need extra support with reading.
It is not only engaging and exciting from cover to cover, it is on a reading level that will help build confidence and strengthen reading skills.
I know these books will be treasured by my students and I hope that they will inspire them to find more texts that are exciting and keep their interest!
