My junior high students love learning again. Our class is the first to be completely devoted to robotics. Watching them learn coding and troubleshooting has been a joy. The programming is helping students apply math and science concepts with real world application to make classroom learning come alive. Journaling about their learning process reinforces that writing is an essential skill. Most students at my school are from low income families, and many are at risk of not graduating. Many are unaware of career options outside of our area. While that is not my immediate goal, it is hopefully an eventual outcome. At my school, we pride ourselves on giving students every opportunity to succeed that we possibly can. It has been a source of pride that we are able to do more with less.
My Project
The supplies I am requesting will be put to good use. I am asking for a portable rolling tool chest, storage drawers, and an NXT programming book.
At present, I have 14% girls in my classes, so it is my hope to increase the amount of girls involved in computer programming.
To do this, I have to take students and robots to the elementary schools. The wheeled tool box will allow for multiple robots to securely travel so that my students can demonstrate what we do in class.
The storage drawers are for those pieces that are left behind after class. I would rather put them in a safe place than have them swept away with the garbage. Lastly, the book will allow my more advanced students to learn RobotC. This is more advanced than the LEGO programming language.
