Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from an array of different backgrounds including Central America, the Caribbean and South America, however, they all represent the urban experience.
My classroom is one where student's opinions drive classroom discussion.
As we started reading "Animal Farm" by George Orwell I discovered that my students were very interested in discussing government control. In one class students were discussing the intricacies between the ethical treatment of animals and how it relates to their taste. In addition to this, students were interested in talking about sweatshops workers which ultimately transitioned in writing reflective piece about the clothes that they buy and wear.
As we move into our social justice unit in February, I would like students to engage with contemporary literature. My decision comes from a multitude of conversations as well as my students' resistance to read narratives (i.e Lord of the Flies and The Pedestrian) which in their opinion relate very little their individual and group identities. Students in my classes are eager to dive deeper into studying the complexities of identity but with familiar and culturally relevant content.
My Project
I hope to obtain 25 copies of All American Boys By Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely to share with my ninth grade students and HOPE Club members. Having access to this text, will afford all students the opportunity to conduct meaningful discussion and develop productive academic arguments during class periods. Students will participate in reader’s theater while at the same time applying 21st century strategies to analyze examples of protest found in the novel. All American Boys will act as a catalyst to starting a greater conversation about human rights and how best to protect them in a urban environment. Students will be given opportunities to practice agency all while learning effective ways to communicate about race, gender and class. These power structures are present throughout Reynold’s and Kiely’s book. I plan to share this text with other English teachers at the school who are dedicated to supporting student voice.
