Building a Tool Kit for Struggling Readers

My students need the Tools 4 Reading Kid Lips Cards and Phoneme/Grapheme Cards to help with forming the sounds of the alphabet and practice connecting those sounds to the letters.

My Students

My students are bright and determined K through 4th graders. I work with them in a small focused group on reading interventions for 20 to 30 minutes per day.

My students are smart and capable children who come to us with a deficit in language due to circumstances beyond their control.

Our school is located in an urban district with 99% of our children qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches. We have a diverse community of children with a high population of English Language Learners. Although, our children come from great challenges they show a resilience for learning. As with many districts, ours is suffering from budget cuts that limit our resources. Quality education is the key for our children to conquer generational poverty.

My Project

Science research shows how essential it is to provide explicit phonological and phonics instruction to young readers in order for them to become fluent and independent readers. The Tools 4 Reading Kid Lips System provides children with a picture of how to form each sound of our alphabetic principle. In addition there are phoneme and grapheme cards providing pictures and spellings of those sounds.

As an interventionist, working with struggling readers, some of whom are English Language Learners, the Kid Lips Cards will provide students with the exact formation of each sound of our alphabetic principle to aid children as they learn to form those sounds.

This is incredibly valuable to these students as this is most often the stumbling block of their reading proficiency. Once students are able to form the sounds they will then connect those sounds to the spellings used to write them.

As an interventionist I travel from room to room and these cards are perfect to put in my cart to use with many children throughout the classrooms I visit.
