Building a STEM Habitat for Our Desert Tortoise Scientist-in-Residence

Help me give my students the supplies they need to create a proper desert tortoise habitat for our hatchling, Shelldon. :)

My Project

My students are incredible young scientists who learn best when they can explore, investigate, and build with their own hands. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of strengths, ideas, and curiosities to our classroom. What they all share is a genuine love of learning when it’s connected to the world around them — especially the natural world here in Arizona.

Our class is lucky to have a desert tortoise as our scientist-in-residence.

This living connection to Arizona wildlife inspires students to ask questions, think critically, and engage deeply in science lessons. For many students, this is their first time caring for and studying a native species up close. It’s a powerful, memorable experience that brings STEM to life.

The specific items selected for our list are related to what Shelldon needs to be healthy within an indoor habitat until he is large enough to move to an outdoor habitat. The webcam and tripod will be of great help when setting up a streaming channel for Shelldon so that our online students, who are unable to make it to campus, can still participate in Shelldon observations!
