Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

My Project
My students are energetic dreamers and fearless mathematicians. They are the first cohort in our founding school and with their help, we are building a community filled with love and joy for math. Math is challenging for many of my students, but they want to be in my class and do well.
When kids get stressed by their classwork or out-of-class events they are unable to walk away from their desk and take a break, unless they are sent to the office with a discipline referral.
This year I've noticed my students struggle with coping strategies. Some have even asked me to just send them to the office. I try to avoid sending students to the office as much as I can, yet by doing so I'm ignoring the student's need to be briefly removed from what is in front of them.
A calm space in my classroom will provide my students with the tools needed to manage their emotions regularly. It will also act as a neutral zone for me to check in with kids about what bothered them and set goals around how much time they can take to reset. A calm space will teach my students how to better regulate their emotions so they can show up and be their best selves.
