Building a Pillar of Support: Social/Emotional Resources

My students need books they and their family can check out around social/emotional needs that they struggle with, so they can have helpful resources available.

My Students

"Every child needs a champion." -Rita Pierson It is my goal to be a champion for all of our students and their families. They all need someone in their corner, cheering them on, the whole way through.

Many students do not get the support they need at home, due to varying circumstances such as poverty, language barriers, educational backgrounds, etc.

The potential I see in each student is incredible. It is my vision to help get them and their families connected to school. A huge part of getting them connected, is ensuring they have the proper support at home. Family support leads to student success and opportunity. It is my hope that through a Family Resource Library, I can help get students and their families connected to valuable resources on a wide variety of topics that address various student needs. When a student is struggling with a certain issue, we can help connect parents to a free resource that they can check out, that pertains to that issue, so we can be proactive in our approach, and support the whole child.

My Project

My students need materials, their family can check out around social and emotional concerns, parenting, absenteeism, study skills, drugs/alcohol, cliques, mindfulness, anger, trauma, and other academic and social/emotional topics. Families who previously have been unable to acquire resources, will have them readily available on a check out basis, in both Spanish and English so that they are accessible to a large number of families. When counselors are working with students and families, we can refer them to our resource library and help them pick materials related to the concerns they are having.

Our students and their families need a Family Resource Center where families can check out materials to help support their students, and themselves as parents/guardians.

Having these in both Spanish and English will make them more accessible. It is our vision that by getting students and families this additional support, we can further connect our students and families to school, creating lifelong learners.
