This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 20 students that are very excited about learning. I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher in a urban area. My class is primarily made up of African American and Hispanic low income students. These students serve on many different levels, for special education to advanced. Our school continues to grow, we are currently at 650 students from grade PK3 to 5th grade. We are a Title I school, students do not always have the funds to get what they need.
My Project
Providing a print-rich classroom environment through the use of writing materials such as wood clipboards, alphabet and mini dry erase boards exposes students to the fundamental reading skills in a functional way. These writing materials help to create an environment that puts children at ease and contributes to self-directed learning by providing them with the materials necessary for success.
Providing a print rich environment is also key as it helps embed literacy skills as these students are preparing to transition to kindergarten where literacy and reading skills are heavily focused on.
Through the use of these materials students will be provided an opportunity to get a head start on the skills necessary as they move on.
