The students in my Pre-K elementary school are a mixture of 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, including children with special needs who have been identified as affected by autism, ADHD and learning and physical disabilities. Many of the children receive speech services also. The children all live in a rural community. The population of our town is 1,700.
The students are very enthusiastic about learning through play.
The children with autism benefit from social stories and picture systems (PECS) to help develop their speech and language delays along with communicating with their teachers and peers. Because they can not read yet, the children often rely on pictures labeled with words to develop reading skills.
The Magna-Tiles in our classroom are the all-time favorite toy in our classroom. The children play with these every single day. Because they play with them so much, they are worn out and starting to crack. We currently only have one set, which makes it difficult for many children to play with them at a time.
The children will be excited to have more tiles so that they can build bigger and better structures.
This will also give more children the opportunity to play with them. We currently only let 2 children play with them at a time because they build such elaborate structures, and our supplies are limited. But this would allow us to let more children work together because it would give us more tiles to build with.
