Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are working learning each day with the added challenge of at least one learning disability. The integration of technology would create a more dynamic learning environment appealing to their interests and unique learning needs. These supplies would make learning more exciting!!!
My students are 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, each student in my class has one or more mild to moderate learning disability and qualifies for special education services.
Every student is unique in how they best learn, but they each share an interest in technology and creativity and they benefit from any type of visual support and small group instruction. All of my students are performing at different grade levels, ranging from 1st to 5th grade, and are working hard to make progress with the challenges of their different disabilities. Because each student is performing at a different grade level, it is important that their learning activities are appropriately designed to meet their specific learning goals. I am a first year teacher and have limited materials, technology and hands-on math manipulatives to enhance their everyday learning experiences. These supplies and technology could transform our classroom and make curriculum goals more attainable for students with learning disabilities.
My Project
The materials will help facilitate small group literacy and math learning stations. Each student is at their own level and has their own needs, they benefit from learning in specialized small groups within the classroom. Pocket charts will help to physically create 4 centers and allow the students to complete various activities within a small group. For example, they would be able to manipulate and study words in a pocket chart to help improve their reading decoding skills. Math manipulatives such as fraction circles are hands-on tools for a collaborative group to use in strengthening their conceptual understanding of fractions. Students will greatly benefit from the technology iPads provide; they will watch lessons at their own pace, pausing and re-watching, study on apps specifically designed for special needs students, and create interesting videos and presentations of their own learning. The mobile easel allows a teacher to move around the groups to support students in centers.
Students with disabilities have many added challenges in their daily life.
Receiving new supplies and technology to enhance small group centers in our classroom will excite and motivate students to work their hardest in school. It will help to create effective learning groups that will specifically address each of the students learning needs. It will also show these students that they are important and valued they are in our school community and that they can find success in learning too!
