Building a Computer Lab, a Newspaper, and a Community

My dedicated journalism students need three widescreen computer monitors and three high-speed desktop computers.

Here is the mission: My journalism students have taken on the task of overseeing a massive, much-needed revamping of their student media. Like most schools, the yearbook and newspaper here were afterthoughts relegated to after-school, created and read by a small group of students. My students knew they needed to build the quality of their product, the diversity of their coverage, the size of their readership, and in so doing, the quality of their school community. And so the work began...

Six months in to this re-engineering, these dedicated students have aggressively studied the art of journalism and experienced the practical challenges of putting together a newspaper and yearbook. They've improved content - photographic and textual - immensely, and they've drawn in students who never before read the paper or bought a yearbook. They've built up our community of learners and achievers by showcasing academic, athletic, and extra-curricular activities, and by providing a forum for student opinion. They've even taken on the task of fund-raising by selling ads to local businesses to help cover increasing printing costs.

But in a rural, rust-belt community with a tiny tax base, ad sales can only go so far. For my students to continue moving their publications to the next level, they need a set of networked computers. From these workstations, they will carry out the tasks of designing attractive pages, importing photos from a central server, hosting a school news website (complete with video!), and carrying out the tasks of running an outstanding student newspaper and yearbook. This print journalism class is the most important course students could take to prepare themselves for college and the world beyond. Here, students face real deadlines and challenges every day. They create a product that is read and critiqued by their peers. And they carry out all the real-world tasks - from ad sales to copy editing - that go into making the paper a success.

I provide instruction, but when it comes to publishing the newspaper and yearbook, I only give feedback. And so students rise to the massive challenge of creating engaging print media, and walk away from the experience better equipped for all that lies ahead. These challenges are meaningful and beneficial. But some challenges - such as a school budget deficit that prevents needed technology investment - are simply too great for students to conquer. With your support, these dedicated learners won't be bound by their tax base. With your support, they will continue to grow and develop skills that will be useful in any profession, and any area of academic study. And with your support, they will continue to author a success story written about, and for, the entire school community.
