This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In September I will begin my fifth year as a pre-k teacher at PS/IS 323 in Brownsville, Brooklyn. We are a Title One school and the majority of my students are African-American and Hispanic. I teach a full day/extended day program of eighteen children.
My students are bright and eager to learn but often arrive at school lacking basic "school" skills that will help them succeed as they move through school.
Resources are always an issue. Because we are not a testing grade we receive fewer materials than other grades. In a high stakes testing atmosphere, pre-k is often overlooked. What we lack in material supplies we compensate by having a committed and dedicated staff, parents, and students who hold high standards and expectations for everyone. However, working hard is sometimes not enough. We still need material resources.
My goal for the year is to help my children explore and discover their special talents and bridge the literacy gap so that they will be successful in school and become lifelong learners.
I am asking for materials to enhance our literacy centers, such as markers, scissors, stamp pads, and other items that will allow the children to explore and discover.
