Building a Classroom That Enjoys Reading

My Project

First grade is the year students are expected to make the most significant progress in learning to read and working alongside their peers. The best way for students to learn is to be engaged! Students need to be engaged with whole-group lessons and while working in small groups. The problem? Sitting on the cold, hard floor while learning a new concept or working with peers is not very appealing!

In my room, we are a family!

Together, we encourage each other to take risks and to learn from our mistakes. To establish a positive learning environment that encourages students to be vulnerable during the learning process, we spend a great deal of time working alongside peers.

We start our day on the floor for Circle Time, by sharing events that have occurred with our friends. This invites students to form friendships and to share their experiences aloud. We stay on the floor for an interactive read aloud. Students love being transported to a new world through listening to books.

Then, we transition into centers. Most of these centers have an intrinsically motivating element to them (working with a friend, using hands-on art supplies, or engaging with technology); however, the reading corner, where students read by themselves, lacks pizazz. This makes it hard to encourage students to choose "reading to themselves" as a center, even though it is one of the most important things for them to do each day! Since my classroom is made up in large part of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, it is crucial to motivate my students to read independently as often as possible.
