Building a Classroom Library to Support Inclusion

My students need access to texts like The Pact and Monster presented in the mainstream to allow for modifications.

My Students

Although my students have academic or emotional challenges, they are eager to work hard, get smart, and follow their dreams. Education is truly valued as a way to create change that will better members of the global community. Students are constantly enriching the classroom with their life experiences. Through these connections to their own lives and the world, the entire class experiences a deeper learning experience. As eighth graders, students are preparing for the exciting next step of high school. We intentionally work on this through an incorporation of discussion strategies, executive functioning skills, and identity development.

My Project

With this project, my students will have access to texts presented in the co-taught setting. These texts can be introduced in the small group setting with pre-teaching of strategies to support decoding and comprehension. The books were carefully selected not only because they feature characters my students can connect with, but also because they are high-interest to those who may be "reluctant readers". Helping connect students with books that interests them will help instill a lifelong love of reading. My hope is to build a library of these high-interest, inclusive books that my students will want to read and that allows us to modify to fit students individual needs.
