Building a Classroom Library for Sustained Silent Reading
My students need access to many young adult novels to promote independent reading. My students need novels from a teacher-built library for those unable to afford them.

My Students
My English IV classroom focuses on vocabulary, specific reading skills enhancement, and sentence composing, the focus of the writing in literary analysis.
I want students to get excited about reading, so I'm implementing a SSR program next year and need many young adult novels for them to read.
My students are all seniors, most of whom will go to some form of higher education.
We are a suburban school in NC with a limited budget of everything. I believe students want to read, but they don't only want to read academic texts; therefore, I want to start a Sustained Silent Reading program in my class, building a library for them to use. I am excited about the possibility of putting a great book in a student's hands and watching him/her get lost in the pages!
My Project
Each class will begin with a 10-minute quiet reading time with students reading a text of their choosing. As the semester goes on, I might increase the reading to 15-minutes (we are on a block schedule). The entire idea is for students to read something they choose, hopefully enjoy it, and look forward to reading more the next day. Ideally, this will carry over into nightly reading, but more importantly, into lifelong reading.
My ultimate goal is to turn students on to reading, especially those who have had little access to books growing up.
Of all the topics covered in high school, reading is the most important, for students will do it forever. I want to cultivate that love of reading because so many students today hate it.
