Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I'm very happy to be starting in a new classroom and teach 7th graders science at a school in the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Mantua. We are a project-based and inquiry driven school, and our students are extremely curious and always in need of material to pull from for their personal interest projects and classroom projects. As I start to put together my new classroom, I would love to create a library for my students with an emphasis on science!

I want to give students access to science fiction literature and other science texts to read for pleasure, and introduce other styles of text to engage and inspire!

My Project

With this project, my students will get to read for pleasure, gather resources for class projects, as well as be exposed to different styles of writing. Students build confidence and find interests and passions when they read independently, and reaching more students is my goal in this project. My students are asked to read independently, create, explore, ask questions, present, and reflect on their learning daily.

By including books in novel and graphic novel form, students may not only enjoy a book in a new way, but also find a new way to express themselves.

Our students are encouraged to work on personal interest projects in a variety of presentation styles.

I'm starting by asking for a large variety of texts so that students have choice and can explore their own interests. I am excited to provide students with a variety of texts that will engage my science lovers and open students up to new genres.
