Building a Class Library for Struggling Readers

My students need a library of independent reading books that represent a variety of reading levels that will encourage struggling readers and English Language Learners.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day, our school pauses for 20 minutes of independent reading. This is our time for students to read books they are interested in and to build the habit of becoming lifelong readers. Unlike during our ELA class, here they have choice and power over what they will read.

My students are 6th graders from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds who live in the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston.

Many have learned English as a second language, and many have struggled as readers in their previous education. I teach many students with learning disabilities, many of whom read several grade levels below their current year. Many are energetic, curious students with a genuine interest in school. Others are more reserved, but reveal to me in private moments that they care and want to do well. Our school makes a particular effort to serve our children, particularly those learning English for the first time and those with special needs unable to be addressed in many nearby schools.

My Project

As my students - even the most engaged, high-performing one - sometimes confide to me: they don't like to read. Many of them have not had sufficient access to appropriately leveled reading materials. They have not necessarily learned how to select books at a good reading level for them, and so have become discouraged again and again when readings assigned in class are too hard and difficult to understand. With the purchase of these books, my class library will become leveled for all of my students. Those who read below grade level (whether due to a learning disability or the fact that they are still learning English) will have more choice and the ability to choose a book of interest to them during independent reading time. Experiencing success while reading on their own will be how many of my students begin to close the gaps in their reading ability and learn to love this activity.

Currently, my class library is made up of books I have received for free and purchased with my own (limited) funds.

My choice is often severely limited to what is available in my area and what other teachers and libraries no longer want. Adding a new crop of high-interest books will pull in my readers who currently spend independent reading time distracted and avoiding their text. My hope is that all of my students will experience books with the same joy and interest that I did as a child.
