Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.
Most of my students are from the local area.
They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can, while supporting the teachers any way they can.
My Project
My students enjoy hands-on learning. As part of our STEM program, I would like my students to successfully design and build a usable birdhouse. They will use the sketch pad and colored pens to get their ideas on to paper and create a final draft. Using the tongue depressors and hot glue, they will then bring their design to life.
Creating birdhouses will require my students to use their math, science, and art skills.
They will also use their patience, cooperative learning skills and creativity. They will need to figure out area and how big their design can be since they will have a limited amount of depressors. They also need to keep in mind the type of bird they wish to attract. Finally, it must look good.
