I teach in a public Pre-K program that includes 4 classrooms with a total of 50 students. The program serves 3 and 4-year-olds with a focus on building foundational skills in a developmentally appropriate setting that develops the whole child. Our school promotes strong family connections and parents are frequent visitors and participants in their child's educational day.
These students are eager learners who are curious about the world around them.
Through play, they are learning to make friends, solve problems, and be creative thinkers. While the children have multiple opportunities daily to develop play skills in the classroom, there is a missing element to their play during recess.
These children need opportunities to develop their learning and physical health by getting back to the basics of creative play during recess.
My Project
Standard Lincoln Logs have been a favorite activity of children for over 100 years. The Giant Lincoln Logs will be a welcome addition to our playground area as we continue to add materials that encourage creativity and imagination.
Building and construction toys provide hours of rich, valuable childhood experiences that develop problem solving skills as well as fine and gross motor skills.
Children develop fine motor skills by manipulating the construction materials and gross motor skills by carrying, bending and stretching to make the log cabins, corrals, and more. Working with and creating these structures develop their thought processes and imagination. The way the logs are notched and how they fit together help children use math skills and engineering skills to make the structures.
The children will also develop language and social skills as they interact with the materials and each other. The children will learn to work together, to share the materials, and to develop cooperation skills. No matter what age you are, construction toys never go out of style and create many learning opportunities that are both fun and educational.
