Children are drawn to water from an early age. I can remember spending hours playing in the creeks around my house as a kid and what fun things I thought up to do with the creatures I would find, what might be hidden under a rock or how to stop up the water and see how the flow changed. Playing in water encourages children to use their imagination and creativity. It is not only enjoyable but educational. It provide hours of rich and valuable childhood experiences and develops math and science concepts along with other developmental skills. Children develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination by pouring, squirting and stirring activities. Making observations about objects, exploring sinking and floating and discovering things and why they happen will help them develop problem-solving skills. Through water play, children explore terms such as empty and full, more and less. They learn about measuring and volume and making comparisons. Children also develop language skills and vocabulary as they play and as a teacher facilitates discussions and conversations about what they are doing. Social-Emotional skills are also developed as children participate in water play. Children learn to cooperate and share and how to work together. Water play, at any age, provides many learning opportunities that are both beneficial and enjoyable and this water table will help us.
