My Project
For the past few years, I have been working to diversify my classroom library and intentionally highlight a small collection each month. I want to make sure all my students have a chance to see themselves reflected in the books I have available and to learn about and empathize with people from different backgrounds. This group of students has really enjoyed exploring all the new books and they have even begun asking for more books on topics they'd like to explore.
As students have been making requests, I have realized that my classroom library is lacking in LGBTQIA+ representation.
Many of my students are eager to see their families, friends, or even themselves reflected in the books we're reading. Others are interested in exploring the shifting ideas of identity as they try to understand the world around them.
This group of students is very inquisitive and very motivated to read on their own. The few books I've presented featuring LGBTQIA+ characters are nearly always checked out, so I know any I add will be well-loved.
