Help me give my students the ability to be able to manipulate words by highlighting letters in books, charts, poems, and their writing. Also, the magnetic letters allow the students to build sight words and manipulate letters.
All my students need to know I care about them each and every day. Many of the students come from homes with teenage moms, single moms, and come from poverty. Our school is all free and reduced breakfast and lunch. West Elementary is a Title I school, but there is no funding available for Title 1 services. The students that are in my classroom do not have the opportunity for necessary early education. I want my classroom to be a place students love to come and learn!
My Project
I do many small reading groups through out the day. This allows me to be able to really focus on reading and skills that students need to acquire along with reading.
So, some of those skills include the ability to chunk words and to be able to blend words together.
Also, we focus of sight word recognition. It is helpful if the students are able to manipulate letters themselves, so this is where the magnetic letters are helpful. The students are able to build words and break them apart. One example, I have students, shake the letters, make the word, read the words, and write the word. I will use the magnetic white boards for them to build their words with their magnetic letters and write their sight words that we are working on. This allows students to be hands on with the activities. The ability to manipulate and move the letters to form words helps the students remember the words or skill we are working on.
Then before or after we are done reading. I like to have the students use highlighter tape to find the words within the books we are reading. This helps them remember the word as they are reading because it provides a visual.
