My classroom is an English language learners classroom in a Title I school. My students love sitting with a partner and reading a good book. At first, "reading" involves looking at the pictures and retelling the story they have heard. Later in the year, they enjoy finding and reading their sight words and using their phonics skills to read the words. Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. Most of the kids do not have home libraries or even a library card to the public library.
Having a wide variety of well-written and engaging books gives my students a chance to develop and use their new reading skills and build a love for reading.
My Project
Our current classroom library needs to grow! Right now, we have books checked out on my personal card for the public library which is limited to 30 books. We have some books from the school library, but our school library has a limited number of early readers. We also have used books I have found at garage sales and Friends of the Library book sales.
My students love colorful Eric Carle books, imaginative Harold and the Purple Crayon books and easy to read non-fiction books which teach them something about our world.
By donating to this project, you will make it possible for my six and seven year old students to enjoy well-written and beautifully illustrated books. These books are fun to read and fun to talk about. Students enjoy drawing pictures of the interesting characters and events and telling about the stories in their own words.
